  • High School Foreign Exchange Students Returning to North State

    August 1, 2021  3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

American Cultural Exchange Service will be bringing 30 foreign exchange students to the North State this year.
The pandemic forced ACES to cancel their foreign exchange student program last school year. Students' dreams of coming to America were put in jeopardy.
Now that vaccines are being widely distributed and there is hope of schools fully re-opening, the students who have been patiently waiting may have a chance to fulfill their dreams.
ACES has started looking for volunteer host families in the Redding area. There are no restrictions on size or make-up of the family, as long as they can pass a background check, don't receive needs-based government assistance, and can provide the student with a bed and a place to put their belongings, three meals a day and transportation to and from school.
These students are coming as recipients of the highly competitive U.S. State Department's Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) scholarship program. These students are chosen not only for academics, but their ability to become future leaders in their home country.
If you are interested in volunteering to host a student, please contact Anna Strait at 530-710-5186 or aceswithanna@gmail.com.

About the Honey Run Covered Bridge Association
When the Honey Run Covered Bridge was destroyed in the November 2018 Camp Fire, a true icon was lost. Honey Run Covered Bridge was constructed over Butte Creek in 1887. Built with Pratt style trusses some fifty years after their invention in the 1840's by Thomas and Caleb Pratt, the bridge was 238 feet long. It was unique due to its three unequal spans (30 feet and 128 feet and 80 feet), and because the center bridge housing was higher than that of its two end housing. The rustic thoroughfare sat between Chico and Paradise over Butte Creek, and was the only three-span truss bridge of its kind in the United States. It was a monument to California's Gold Rush and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

On October 27, 2020, Butte County transferred Bridge ownership to HRCBA with the understanding that the HRCBA will rebuild the Bridge with private donations. The total cost of the rebuild is $2.9 million, and HRCBA has already raised $1.1 million.
