11th Annual Seed Swap: Gardening Season Is Here!

Chico, CA – The Chico Seed Lending Library (CSLL) is hosting the 11th Annual Seed Swap on Saturday, January 25th, 2020 from 12-2pm at the Trinity United Methodist Church at E. 5th St and Flume in downtown Chico. This annual exchange of seed is a community event in celebration of seed, seed saving, gardening, good eating, and the joy of the approaching gardening season. The Seed Swap is a free event and will include the exchange of seed as well as pall things from the garden.

Again this year we will open a little early for the “Home Grown Seed Share”. At 11:30am, before the event is open to the general public, we will open for a special session for Camp Fire gardeners looking to fill their gardens and for seed savers who have home grown seed to share. This time allows those with local seeds the chance to talk about their seed face to face with other seed savers. One of the missions of the Chico Seed Lending Library is to advocate for locally adapted seed and we want to support people doing this important work. Simply package up, label, and bring your home grown seed to share at 11:30am and enjoy some extra time to swap seeds and seed stories with other community seed savers.

    How the Seed Swap Works:
The seed exchange itself functions in the same manner as a community potluck: there will be tables for folks to leave their donations and then everyone gets to take a share. The tables will be labeled to help direct participants where to place or find the different types of offerings, such as warm or cool season vegetable seed, flower seed, plants, cuttings, scions and more. Participants who bring items to share, place their clearly labeled contributions on the appropriate tables then continue around to gather a share of what others have brought. In the spirit of community it is encouraged that folks only take what they need in order that everyone can have a bountiful garden. This may include taking only a portion of a seed packet and leaving the rest.

Besides seeds saved from their own gardens, participants may also bring in leftover purchased seeds, fruit and veggies from their garden, working garden tools, bulbs, root divisions, whole plants, cuttings, and scion wood. Scion wood is the top 6-10” of a healthy tree branch which has been cut in order to be grafted onto a different tree or root stock. Providing seed or plants to share is not required but bringing your own pen and envelopes or other containers to store your new bounty is a real help to everyone.

For 11 years now Chico’s Annual Seed Swap events have been a great way to bring our community together to inspire and teach each other and to help jumpstart our gardens, enabling more folks to get their hands dirty and their bellies full.. The Seed Swap is always free and a fun way to celebrate the approaching Spring season for all members of our community.
